Working in Australia

If you have come to Australia without having a job in hand, read on.

To increase your chances of landing yourself a good job I would highly recommend getting in touch with a reputed recruitment consultant (agency), in addition to finding jobs online. Apart from long term, permanent opportunities, thankfully Australia also has a lot of other categories of jobs including temporary, part-time, casual, and even for those who are holidaymakers but have permission to work.

Best Online Job Sites
There are plenty of online sites that you can go to, however the best and most comprehensive of these are:
1. Seek
2. My Career
3. CareerOne
4. Jobs

In addition, there are also sites for specialised industries or professions, such as jobs in government or engineering and so on - I will not go into those here.

Best Online Work-from-Home Sites
If you are a woman who wants to work from home or want flexi-options due to family reasons, there are a number of good sites for you:
1. Career Mums
2. Mums @ Work
3. Work at Home Mums
4. Virtual Angels

Recruitment Consultants
The top ones in my opinion would be:
1. Hays
2. Manpower

Landing in Australia

Generally the immigration formalities on landing at Australian airports should not take very long to complete. You will be handed a Customs declaration card on your flight just before landing (it is also available at the airport), and this card will ask you to tick important information with respect to what you are carrying.

Customs
Remember, Australia has strict laws prohibiting the import of weapons, firearms, drugs and severe penalties can be applied for non-declaration. Any item with an animal or vegetable origin must be declared. Wooden items must always be declared. Over the counter medicines are allowed, and for prescription drugs it is best to have a doctors certificate with you. If you are not sure of any item, it is best to declare it. No more than 10 packs of cigarettes (i.e., one carton or 200 single cigarettes) can be brought in with you. Cash amounts of more than $A10,000 in bank notes and coins must be declared.

For complete information on what is/is not allowed, visit the Government's official information page.

Immigration & Exit
Once you have filled out your form, you queue up for immigration where the Officer will ask you a few questions and you will be on your way to luggage retrieval. Once you have taken all your luggage you move towards the exit where you hand over the Customs Card stamped by the Immigration Desk to the Officer at the Luggage Scanning section. All luggage will go through the scanner, and it is the discretion of the officer to ask you to open any bag.

Exit & Travel to Destination
Once you are out of the airport, if there is no one to receive you at the airport, then you can take any of taxi, bus, shuttle, limousine or train to your destination. In Sydney, all of these options are available. Sydney Airport is located about 8km from CBD (Central Business District) or city centre.
